All of our whole house carbon filter packages also include a high quality sediment pre-filter to remove dirt, sediment, rust particles, and other particulate; thereby improving water clarity, taste, and odor, and protecting your home's plumbing system including your carbon filter and other water treatment equipment from damage and pre-mature clogging due to sediment build-up.

All of our sediment filters use multi-gradient spun polypropylene filter cartridges. These cartridges use the entire depth of their media by trapping the largest sediment particles on the outside of the filter, then gradually stepping down the size of particles they will reject as the water moves closer to the core of the filter. The result is longer filter life, greater dirt-holding capacity, higher flow rates, and remarkably low pressure drop.

Our carbon filters are true "whole house" filters with large diameter and surface area to ensure low pressure loss, long filter life, and improved contaminant reduction rates. Our filter housings are made by the largest manufacturer of water filters in the world. The housings are NSF-certified Standard 42 - material requirements and are constructed of heavy duty polypropylene. They feature large diameter 1" inlet and outlets for low pressure drop, as well as a convenient pressure relief button.

A sturdy powder-coated steel mounting bracket, mounting screws, hardware and fittings to join the two filter housings, and a spanner wrench are also included with every filter package. Our standard systems are designed for average residential whole house flow rates. Even our standard units have more flow capacity, less pressure drop, more dirt-holding capacity, and longer-filter life than most competitors' models.

If you need even higher flow rates, our High Flow Series models are designed for more demanding applications. By increasing the size of the carbon media bed, our High Flow Series models also further enhance contaminant removal at average flow rates by extending the contact time between the media and the contaminants.

This is due, unfortunately, in part to the great amount of marketing and hype that is given to so many different types of air filtering devices and mechanisms.

Air filters are devices that remove dust from an air stream as the dust-laden air passes through them. There are three types of air filters:. Mechanical air filters remove dust by capturing it on the filter medium, the material that makes up the filter element.

Comparative Tests on Pressure Drop of HVAC Filters

A mechanical air filter is any type of dry media filter. Any man made or natural fiber filter is a mechanical air filter. This includes HEPA air filters as well. Mechanical air filters operate on two filtration principals, primary air filtration or impingement of the dust on the media itself, and secondary air filtration which is the dust or filter cake on the filter removing or filtering out smaller dust particles.

Figure A1 shows the air filter when it is first installed. Most of the air filtration takes place in the media itself. Figure A2 shows the air filter with dust on the media and the particle reduction efficiency gets better as the filter loads up.

All mechanical air filters operate in this manner. For additional information on mechanical air filtration, click here. I will try to keep this simple and short so as not to add to some of the confusion over air filter efficiencies. First, I would like to point out that any company that sells an air filter that states an efficiency rating without basing it on a particle size is providing you with basically useless information. Our HEPA air filters remove At first glance these two air filters look similar in capability.

But the first air filter provides no particle size range or efficiency based on particle size. This numbering system makes it easier to evaluate and compare mechanical air filters and will hopefully eliminate some of the confusion regarding the overall effectiveness of any type of a mechanical air filter on removing airborne particulates, especially those that are less than 2 microns in size. On the page below you will see the new MERV ratings. This MERV rating chart has the MERV ratings, on the left hand column and then there are five other columns showing the average efficiency in microns, average arrestance and the final resistance as measured in inches of water.

Most companies that make air filters are now using this MERV rating, so you will see a MERV number on the air filter and perhaps some rated efficiency. Open Comparison Chart. Electronic Air Cleaners use a series of wires in a grid form that are electrically charged. There is no media for which the particles can be trapped and no additional dust cake for continued air filtration efficiency.

Otomoto de

Every time the wires or plates are charged they loosen some of the particles that are attached. And, as the wires become coated the efficiency of the Electronic Air Cleaner system is reduced. In fact, Electronic Air Cleaners are the only air filtering device that becomes less efficient as it loads up. As a result of their type of performance, they do not use a MERV rating. Electronic Air Cleaners units need to be cleaned frequently to maintain good efficiency.

Electrostatic air filters are made by a number of companies and these can be purchased in most hardware stores. The typical electrostatic air filter is made from polyester or polypropylene strands that are supposedly charged as the air passes through them.

Arrestance is NOT efficiency. It is the percent of weight, in grams of dust, that the Electrostatic Air filter can hold before it loads up completely. They usually have a metal frame and do not fit tightly into the air filter frame. A highly over rated air filter type.

Pressure Drop Considerations in Air Filtration

All HEPA air filters must meet a minimum efficiency of I talk about the importance of changing air filters to customers and techs but I never stay up on replacing my own. Yesterday I walked into my mechanical room and my 2-ton air handler sounded like a vacuum cleaner about to implode.

So today I grab a filter from my nearby hardware store, a common brand and pull it out of the plastic wrap to install it. With most systems being rated at 0. On a PSC blower motor this extra static from this filter would result in lower airflow, poor system performance and poor air distribution. This is why larger filter cabinets with lower pressure drop filters often make sense or oversized filter back return grilles.

The proprietary blend of specialty detergents will liquify heavily embedded grease and grime to restore heat transfer and increase the efficiency of the coil. Viper Condensate Pan and Drain Treatment is a sprayable gel. It coats the pan, p-trap and drain piping with a lubricative film to improve flow and prevent future soil adhesion.

The slow dissolving enzyme gel will outperform and outlast conventional tablets and strips. One drop of Nylog on your rubber hose gaskets prior to attaching your core tools, hoses or vacuum gauge will assure that things do not bind or leak during evacuation. Typically, one drop of Nylog can be stretched about three feet before breaking. Quick, accurate flaring equipped with high-performance, large capacity lithium battery, adjustable speed control and quick-connect, it makes flaring easy and enjoyable, while guaranteeing accurate and consistent flaring. Email address.By design, HEPA air filters will create resistance to flow, and a high differential pressure drop will exist across the filter.

The advantages of operating to high pressure drop must be weighed against initial costs higher-static-pressure fans, larger motors, heavier ductworkhigher power costs, and less efficient fan operation. The installed fan and motor must have sufficient capacity to deliver the design airflow at the maximum differential pressure under which the system will operate, with the filters at maximum dirty-filter pressure drop prior to change.

Therefore, consideration must not only be given to the increased installed capacity required to operate to the higher pressure drop, but also to the fact that the fan operates at a penalty much of the time to provide the required airflow over the wide span of pressure drop between installation and replacement of filters.

The cost of ductwork, on the other hand, may not be significantly affected by operation to a high pressure drop because there is a minimum sheet-metal thickness for effective welding, regardless of pressure. The cost of fans and motors is a function of the maximum total pressure that must be developed. Fan horsepower can be estimated from the following equations. Although investment and power costs will be lower for systems operated to 2-in.

Total savings for the facility as a whole may be even greater when the reduced interruption of building or facility operations, such as clean rooms, due to the reduced frequency of filter change is taken into consideration. Some pre-filters can be operated to higher pressure drops than recommended by their manufacturers but such overuse must be supported by operating experience.

This results in less frequent pre-filter changes than when pre-filters are changed at a pressure drop of only two or three times the clean-filter pressure drop, as recommended by most manufacturers. Care must be taken in selecting pre-filters. Because of the many types, efficiencies, configurations, and constructions available, the designer must specifically investigate the safe overpressure allowance for the particular model under consideration. Some benefit could also have been obtained by installing a screen or expanded metal grille on the downstream face of the pre-filters against which the filter cores could bear; in any event, screens or grilles would have prevented damage to the HEPA filters when pieces of pre-filter struck them.

Water treatment plants are not always effective at removing harmful substances from your water supply. To ensure the protection of you, your family, and your children, it is recommended that you get a Reverse Osmosis System to reduce more contaminants in your drinking water. Also, Whole House Water Filters filter the water coming into your house which can increase the life of your appliances having cleaner water. The filters you need will depend on the contaminants in your water and the level of sediment in your water.

Calculate Pressure Drop in Filters and Strainers

The following three stage process is the basic water filtration needed. Stage 1: Whole House Sediment Filtration The water should first go through a sediment water filter to reduce sand, dirt, rust, and other sediment.

Mixture of colgate and soda for abortion

You want to have the water go through a sediment filter first so it does not clog up the carbon filter, which is more expensive. The sediment filter will prolong and protect the carbon filter. You will need a whole house housing to hold the sediment filter. Depending on your desired flow rate and desired length between filter changes, you will probably want either the 10 inch big blue system or the 20 inch big blue system.

The 20 inch big blue filter will last longer and allow for greater flow rates because the water filter is larger. After you have the whole house housing, you will then fill the housing with the sediment water filter that meets your needs. This filter has two different layers of micron filtration. It filters down to 5 microns, but does not clog as quickly because the outer layer filters larger particles down to 50 microns.

If there is a lot of sediment in your water, you may want to consider two whole house systems to reduce sediment before the carbon filter.

For example, the first sediment filter could be a 20 micron filter such as the RBB. A second sediment filter such as the DGD could be used to reduce sediment down to 5 microns.Remember Me?

Pressure drop across filters - did test surprising results Ok I have been wondering what are the static pressure losses on the different style width filters.

So I set up a test. The cut out to filter is almost full size. I put two 1" 90s at each end to hold filters other wise they would fall in.

Technical Data

So new opening size 23" x 15". For info it is a zoned system - Main zone stat fan on so roughly cfm. The total static pressure across furnace was. Also made sure meter zeroed before each test - removed hoses. Fan on all the time. Filters Used: all filters were new except for the Space Guard which has 4 -5 months on it and looks like new. I change every two years we have a clean house.

Test 1 with Space guard door on. No filter base reading. There is only one truly right way to do something, but there are thousands of ways to varying degrees of wrong to do it also.

So the question is: If you don't do it right, then how wrong is it going to be??? GTga-hvac-tech liked this post.

I did a similar test though not as thorough. Our system is set on CFM. Had a filthy media in a cabinet. Drop was. Put a clean media in, drop was. Put a 20x25x1 pleated in clean. We test 20 filters for pressure drop and efficiency. It is often very difficult to compare pressure drop for HVAC air filters. Even though filter tests are standardized it is not unusual for the same type of filter to be tested in two different laboratories with two different results.

In addition, filter tests are run at different speeds which has a significant effect on pressure drop numbers. In addition, marketing literature is not consistent and one can seldom compare published data from product to product. Consequently, there is a great deal of confusion in this area. Furthermore, there are a number of myths in the HVAC industry regarding air filters. The jist of the myth is that these filters are the only ones that have a low enough resistance to allow sufficient airflow for the system to operate adequately.

To build some good comparative data we tested 20 different air filters of various types, thicknesses and efficiencies. Our test duct is 8 feet long, two feet wide and two feet high. The test duct fans can operate up to a speed of fpm. Twenty filters were obtained for the tests. Ten were purchased at hardware and home improvement stores. Each filter was tested at fpm, fpm and fpm and the pressure drops were recorded. In addition, a laser particle counter that counts particles of 0.

The results of the tests are presented in the above table. Filters purchased in stores are listed by their trade name. Commercial filters are listed by the type of filter or the MERV of the filter.
